Avenir is one of the most historically significant typefaces, being typesetter Adrian Frutiger's most well known work to date. This type specimen booklet is a celebration of the accomplishment of Avenir.
The conceit behind this project was to see how far I could push typography by itself. What design principles could I use to turn letters alone into designs, and how could I maintain visual interest for five spreads? The answer for this project was contrast in scale, color, and white space.
The original ideation for this booklet was to capitalize on Avenir's industrial utility and add colors/imagery reminiscent of a steel foundry, the conceit being that Avenir is constructed with the precision of a steel mold. The colors of molten steel ended up playing nicely with the dark bluish-gray, which gave way to the bright and bold look of the design.
